Multicultural Affairs has selected its new director after hosting two rounds of forums.

Alumna Melanie Johnson will begin her position Feb. 1. She was the last of five candidates brought to campus to address questions from the UTA community.

“Ms. Johnson was selected because of her past experiences of leading change and focus on social justice education,” said Andre Fortune, assistant vice president for student affairs in an email. “Being a UTA alumna was an added bonus.”

Johnson was the Diversity and Inclusion director at Tarleton State University prior to taking a position at UTA.

During her Q&A forum on Dec. 5, she said there are five responsibilities the department should focus on: to innovate, consult, educate, advocate and celebrate.

Johnson was one of three candidates brought to campus after the hiring committee decided against moving forward with the initial candidates brought in July.
